Timely aid for Türkiye-Syria earthquake victims
The devastating effects of the earthquake that struck northern Syria and Türkiye reverberated across the world . With a rising death toll and structural damage to thousands of buildings , Qatar Red Crescent Society ( QRCS ) immediately mobilised its teams to provide emergency aid and medical support .
After a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Türkiye near the border with
Syria in early February 2023 , thousands were immediately killed and many thousands more left injured , homeless , and trapped in the rubble .
When the call came for international help , the State of Qatar was well placed to respond . QRCS had been working in Syria since 2012 , with relief personnel stationed in the northern region and a representation office in Gaziantep , southern Türkiye .
As a result , QRCS had gained extensive experience in responding to the humanitarian needs of people in the region .
